Why Christopher ‘CJ’ Nurse built a Canvas teaching companion around course preparation, useful AI assistance, and the instructor’s final approval.
Before a course reaches a student, a professor has to turn an idea into a syllabus, a schedule, modules, assignments, and materials that make sense together. That preparation is real work. It is also the work that led me to build ReadySetClass.
I’m Christopher “CJ” Nurse, founder of ContentCreators.life and a mass communications professor. ReadySetClass connects my classroom practice with my work as an app developer: a teaching companion built around the course-management system instructors already use.
Start with the work behind the course
A course connects objectives, activities, materials, and feedback. The syllabus has to agree with the weekly plan. The assignments need to support the objectives. The material has to be understandable once it reaches Canvas.
ReadySetClass brings those preparation tasks into one conversation with Bonita. Its current public offering covers syllabi, weekly lesson plans, quizzes, study packs, and publishing course materials to Canvas. The point is to help an instructor move from what they want to teach to a course they can review.
Use AI assistance with a clear approval boundary
The product’s public promise is direct: “You talk. Bonita does the Canvas work.” The other half matters just as much: the instructor approves what goes into Canvas.
A draft and a published assignment are different things. A suggested score and a grade on a student’s record are different things too. ReadySetClass’s AI grading feature is labeled Beta, with review and approval required before grades are posted.
That boundary is central to the product. Assistance should make preparation easier while leaving decisions with the person responsible for the class. The instructor still checks accuracy, tone, relevance, and whether the material fits the students in front of them.
Keep Canvas in the workflow
ReadySetClass works as a companion to the existing Canvas learning-management system. Its Canvas publishing tools connect the prepared course materials to the place students will use them.
The practical lesson for a builder is to look at the whole handoff. Generating a paragraph is one step. Helping somebody organize it, review it, and get it into the right course is the larger task. The value lives in that complete workflow.
Make the product useful outside the chat
The current public site also offers faculty guides, a syllabus template, and a course-setup checklist. Those resources make the problem concrete: an instructor can arrive with a specific Canvas question and find a next step.
ReadySetClass’s Presentation Studio extends the preparation workflow into editable slides. These are connected pieces of work: the course plan, the materials, and the presentation should support the same teaching goals.
The lesson I carry into the next build
Building for educators means respecting their existing tools and their judgment. My role is founder and product builder, with classroom practice informing the work. The aim is less time assembling a course and more room for the teaching itself.
